چکیده

Recent engineering experiences highlight the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) as a System of Systems (SoS), and traditional probability models were limited in capturing the complex interactions between component systems. A novel approach was proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of the whole BMDS from the aspect of functional interactions, rather than the functions of components. First, Functional Dependency Network Analysis (FDNA) was introduced to build the analysis model through integrating the component systems in multi-layered kill chains of BMDS. The key metrics were proposed to measure the effectiveness from both probability of raid annihilation and system response time. Finally, the application of this method was demonstrated through a case study, and the result shown the holistic characters of BMDS at SoS level. The case shown that FDNA was a promising way to analyze SoS at high level.

Discrimination Performance Requirements for Ballistic Missile Defense

III A missile defense system must be able to deal with an attack containing decoys in addition to warheads. If the defense system does not have enough interceptors to shoot at all the incoming objects, it must be able to discriminate between decoys and warheads. This discrimination process is not perfect and results in two types of errors: leakage (not shooting at warheads) and false alarms (sh...

The Growing Importance of Ballistic Missile Defense

The idea of ballistic missile defense (BMD) is not new. It originally emerged in the early years of the Cold War as part of the overall strategic competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. The notion that ballistic missiles could be intercepted and destroyed in flight offered the prospect of a system of security based upon an “active defense” rather than the unnerving notion of...

Stochastic Analysis of the Interception of Maneuvering Antisurface Missiles

The interception of a maneuvering antisurface missile, as in ballistic missile defense and ship defense scenarios, is formulated as an imperfect information, zero-sum, pursuit-evasion game with a state constraint imposed on the evader. Assuming that the perfect informationversion of the gamedoes not yield a successful result for the defense, the solution of this game is in mixed strategies. The...

Optimal Allocation and Effectiveness of Midcourse Interceptors in a Layered Defense

Adaptive preferential employment of interceptors in midcourse ballistic missile defense is considered. The defense discriminates decoys, with such discrimination characterized by a K-factor, and determines optimal intercepts and salvo structure in shoot-look-shoot scenarios. The attacker's strategy to determine proper allocation of warheads to targets of varying value in the presence of a defen...

Theater Missile Defense and South Asia : a Volatile Mix

Gregory Koblentz is a Junior Fellow with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C. The missile competition in South Asia is on the verge of a new and dangerous phase that threatens to disrupt the delicate strategic balance of the subcontinent. India and Pakistan already have stockpiles of ballistic missiles, along with the associ...
